Field Biology

BIO SCI E166L (4.0 units)Session II

Conducting group and independent studies in Southern California ecosystems, this course covers the fundamentals of experimental design, statistical analysis, communicating scientific findings (orally, visually, in writing), and other skills necessary for the scientific investigation of biological processes in the field. Materials fee. Prerequisite: (BIO SCI 100 or BIO SCI 108) and BIO SCI E106. Satisfactory completion of the Lower-Division Writing requirement. (Ib) This course consists of remote independent work with weekly deadlines, one in person meetings each TH 1:00pm - 4:50 pm and a required 3-day overnight field trip to the UC James Reserve (https://james.ucnrs.org/), a field station near Idyllwild, CA. Here you will conduct a capstone independent study in small groups. This field trip is required and will be offered two times (attend one), August 26-28 and September 2-4 based on a signup, first come first serve basis. This site is a 2 hour drive from the UC Irvine campus. We can provide transportation for only a limited number of students, and we expect most will arrange their own transportation to and from the site.
