Hollywood and History: The Past of the Future
COM LIT 9 (4.0
units) –
Session I
Words like ‘progress,’ ‘development,’ ‘growth,’ and ‘advancement,’ are central to how we think
about our own lives as we supposedly move towards ‘maturity,’ are they not? This course will
examine contemporary films by Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Alejandro Iñárritu, Bong
Joon-Ho, and Daniel Kwan, among others, which ask us to rethink such ‘linear’ ways of thinking
about individual development and historical time. Some of the themes we will focus our
discussions on include individual agency, political action, globalisation, and alternative histories. (IV and VII).
