Hong Kong Cinema

EAS 40 (4.0 units)Session II

Historically a British colony and now a major Chinese city, Hong Kong had been the second largest exporter of films in the world for decades. What made Hong Kong cinema capture the hearts of audiences worldwide, and what kinds of stories does cinema tell us about Hong Kong? In this course, we will watch films from Hong Kong from different genres: martial art, action, gangster, arthouse, and family melodrama, directed by world-renowned filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai and Ann Hui. We will examine Hong Kong cinema’s aesthetics, its historical development, and its relations to East Asian popular culture, to understand its role in the invention of Hong Kong’s unique cultural identity. All films have English subtitles and course readings are in English. (VI and VIII).
