Romantics & Victorians

ENGLISH 102C (4.0 units)Session I

Close reading of some major romantic poetry (primarily by Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Keats) and their inheritors in late romantic and “Victorian” poetry (e.g., Browning, Dickinson, Hopkins, Hardy, early Yeats). Focus on the self-reflexivity peculiar to these poems, the vision of history it engenders, and the question of “belatedness.” Two papers. Prerequisite: Three courses selected from ENGLISH 8, ENGLISH 9, ENGLISH 10, ENGLISH 11, ENGLISH 12, ENGLISH 15, ENGLISH 16, ENGLISH 17. Or LIT JRN 20 and LIT JRN 21 and one course selected from the above list. Repeatability: Unlimited as topics vary.
