History of Hip-Hop Culture

AFAM 143 (4.0 units)Session I

What is hip-hop “culture”? Why do many practitioners distinguish it from “rap music”? How did hip-hop emerge from the basements and block parties of Black and Latino youth in New York City to its current status as a global phenomenon with billionaires among its artist alumni? Through an intensive examination of the music, people, histories, and controversies of hip-hop, we will address these questions and more. We will also deep-dive into analyses of race, gender, socio-historical events, and their intersections in intensive, engaging sessions. Attendance and participation are mandatory. Repeatability: Unlimited as topics vary.
