FRENCH 50 (4.0 units)Session II

A survey of French films from the invention of cinema to the contemporary period with an emphasis on classical genres and movements. We will pay particular attention to the French films for their contributions to cinema as an art form and a means of commentary upon human society. Accordingly, we will analyze critically the canonical films within their historical context and as representative of the artistic/cinematic movements that French cinema traversed so far. From the Lumière brothers to Surrealism, Poetic Realism, New Wave, Modern cinema, post-May’68, fin-de-siècle, and the new millennium cinema. The course is taught in English.
